Our story

A free discount card — built by Mob, for Mob

FirstCard helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people stretch everyday money a little further — with a card that carries your name, costs nothing, and is reviewed by our own people.

Chapter one

Why this exists

The cost of the basics — groceries, fuel, school books, medicine — falls hardest on the families who can least carry it. A discount that seems small to a business can mean a full tank or a week’s groceries to a family.

FirstCard exists to put real, everyday savings into Mob’s hands, without anyone having to prove they’re “doing it tough”.

Chapter two

Why it’s free

Plenty of discount and membership cards charge a yearly fee. We didn’t think Mob should have to pay to access savings meant to help them.

Chapter three

Who’s behind it

FirstCard is built by Barayamal, an Aboriginal-led not-for-profit founded in 2017 by Dean Foley. Every application is reviewed by real people who understand community — not an automated system.

We wanted something that belonged to Mob: free to join, respectful about identity, and honest about what it is. A card you can carry with pride.— Barayamal

Chapter four

Where we’re heading

With support from the NAB Foundation, we’re growing the network of partners offering genuine savings, and opening FirstCard to Mob right across Australia — including families affected by disaster and hardship.

Who can apply

Three respectful ways to confirm you’re Mob

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people can join. Pick whichever pathway suits you — none is a lesser option.

Confirmation of Aboriginality

Upload an existing letter from a Land Council, Aboriginal corporation or community-controlled organisation.

Community reference

An Elder, leader or recognised community member who can vouch for your connection.

Self-declaration

Your own words about community, country and family connection — valid, especially if you’re reconnecting.

What FirstCard is not: it is not a government ID or proof of identity, it never asks for payment details, and discounts are offered at each partner’s discretion (not guaranteed).

Acknowledgement of Country

FirstCard acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to Elders past and present.
